20250413 William O. Douglas Trail, Part 1

I’ve been exploring the Willam O. Douglas Trail between White Pass and Yakima. This is a National Historic Trail commemorating Justice William O. Douglas’ boyhood in Yakima and his travels into the highlands and Mt. Rainier. Part 1 of my exploration took me to the USFS 570 Rd south of Rimrock Lake.

I drove a short distance up the road and parked at a pull out next to a small creek. The site was littered with some trash, but nothing to bad and I only planned to be there for the night. Built a campfire and had a nice, relaxing evening. In the morning, I set out walking up the road toward Lost Lake.

The road is washboarded, but in good shape, and obviously the area is popular for dispersed camping, with many dozens of campsites on either side of the road. Reaching the junction with the 1201 Rd, I turned south/southwest toward Kloochman Rock, continuing south then east on to Pickle Prairie Meadows and Long Lake. I hit snow and turned back before I got to Pickle Prairie, though.

The weather was gorgeous, only a couple of vehicles passed me on the road, and it was all very quiet.

Images taken April 13, 2025 along USFS 570 Rd, OWNF.

12.74 miles hiked w/ 1,870′ elev. gain.
